Repost from @chaseweideman Samuel*, 34, fled from the violence in Caracas, where his five siblings and his parents still live. He’s currently one of our English for Everyday Life students, so I’m lucky to be able to to see him twice a week. During his English assessment with me, I asked him to write a passage about an important day in his life, this is what he wrote… Every time we talk with him, we’re amazed by his optimism, his positive energy, I’m not kidding when I say that we all walk away in better moods after having seen him. The man is always smiling. @theIRC has found him a survival job to help get him on his feet and save some money. With five years of legal academics in law school and law experience in Venezuela under his belt, Samuel could easily enroll in an LLM program here in New York and become a licensed lawyer in NYC in one year. But for now, he’s constrained by needing to improve his English and earn a living wage for a while to save up enough money for school. With the funds I’m trying to raise, the Adult Education department here at @theIRC will be able to provide Samuel with academic counseling, ensure he’s enrolled in high-quality & intensive English classes (that aren’t free, but are currently out of his financial reach) that meet his academic needs and don’t conflict with his work schedule. He’s just one of hundreds of refugees and asylee’s that we personally work with every day who will be immediately impacted by your donation. It would mean so much if you could take a moment and donate. Link is in my bio. *Name changed for confidentiality
