I feel bad for people who feel discouraged and afraid of being themselves. Shaping and molding yourself to be more palatable for others has to be emotionally and mentally exhausting. As an African-American there is no negotiation of my identity. There is no flying under the radar. In knowing the history of my people, the obstacles and hardships we’ve overcome, I find strength. I am who I am and if you don’t like it, too bad. I’ve been speaking truth to power since birth and I’m going to continue to occupy spaces not only for myself, but for the next generation. The same holds true for me as a Muslim and American. I will continue to stay rooted in my conviction and continue to be proud. Let us not lose ourselves and allow other people to tell us what our Islam or American identity should look like. Be fearless. Be proud. FAITH over FEAR every damn time.
