Gratitude is a life choice, a wonderful discipline of the spirit. Such a special day – for an equally special country that looks back to its roots on today’s holiday – is an extraordinary occasion to practice joining hands and giving “thanks”. This restores value to our days and to the miracle that is the life of each and every one of us. The power of the message that this holiday brings lies fully in this little great word, that is shared with our families in a moment of prayer, of familial intimacy, of joy.

To the Father who is smiling down on us and listening to us from the heavens, and who answers to the name – whatever it may be – with which we pray to him, we turn to him with even greater thanks today – yet how lovely it would be to do so every day – and we ask him to bless us and this food.

These gifts that his goodness has given us, because through this food we celebrate our earthly home: that body that is the form and expression of the secret and lively world of the soul. 
To the Father who watches over us we ask that he sustains us, that he does not abandon us in this passionate pursuit that lasts our whole lives.

We ask that, in the face of the poverty and suffering that afflict the world, that he does not allow us to stumble into the ambiguousness of despondency, into the sterile feeling of helplessness. And, more than anything else, we thank him, in the stubborn desire that our optimism, generosity, hope and happiness will never diminish.
