#Repost @humanrightscampaign. Today is a time to reflect and recommit to ending the epidemic of anti-trans violence. Heartbreakingly, 2018 has seen at least 22 trans people killed by violent means -- the majority of whom were Black trans women. We say “at least” because some victims’ deaths may go unreported, while others may not be identified as trans in the media, often because authorities, journalists and/or family members refuse to acknowledge their gender identity. Using correct identifiers and pronouns isn’t just about accuracy–it’s about affording all individuals the respect and dignity that everyone deserves. @HRC Foundation offers a guide for reporters covering trans, non-binary & gender-expansive people. Across the US anti-transgender stigma & systemic discrimination heighten the vulnerability of trans people from an early age. For trans women of color, who comprise the vast majority of victims, these challenges are further exacerbated by & intertwined with racism & sexism. n order to end anti-transgender violence, we must acknowledge the true identities of its victims and address the ways in which societal attitudes regarding these identities may have played a role in their deaths. Even in the face of physical danger, hatred & discrimination—sometimes ruthlessly endorsed and enforced by those at the highest level of our government—transgender Americans live courageously & overcome unjust barriers in all corners of our country. Until we as a country address & dismantle these barriers, transgender people will continue to face higher rates of discrimination, poverty, homelessness & violence. We must honor these victims' truth & bravery with action. #TDOR #TransDayOfRemembrance 2/2
