This painting I created back in '07 is not intended to be a portrait of a specific individual but a representation of a tradition of social commentary through music. The phrase "THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS" was originally on American folk musician Woody Guthrie's guitar. Joe Strummer of The Clash was a huge fan of Guthrie, and even called himself "Woody" before re-naming himself Joe "Strummer". Strummer borrowed from Guthrie and placed an "IGNORE ALIEN ORDERS" sticker on his guitar. Though the portrait loosely resembles one of Strummer's contemporaries, Paul Weller of The Jam, the painting is not him, and is more about an iconoclastic musician archetype that bridges folk, rock, and punk. - Shepard
