The first time @asherald saw a painting of a black person in a museum, she knew she could be an #artist. "I paint everyday people and want the images to be recognized as universal,” Sherald tells TIME. "For black viewers, it’s a place of rest and a place to receive love, to walk into a space like a #museum and see an image of a person that looks like you looking back at you. People take for granted that not seeing yourself can lead you to not loving yourself.” In September 2016, Sherald found out @ミシェル・オバマ chose her to paint her official First Lady portrait. Sherald instantly realized she was going to be the first black woman to paint one. "Having the opportunity to leave behind that kind of legacy is something that I never thought I’d be able to do.” See more #women who are changing the world at TIME.com/firsts.
