We have approximately 100 billion neurons inside the human brain; more than the number of stars in the galaxy. These neurons are not static. Like stars, they transmit electrochemical signals before they die. It’s these billions of tiny electrical pulses that shape everything about you - your movement, your thoughts, your emotions. Everything. All the poetry of who we are...past, present, and future...represented in one single pulse of energy. This spike of a single neuron is now permanently etched into my neck.

In 2016, I wrote a treatment for a documentary on the future of the brain, and with my partner @bryanjohnson_ , set out to make a film to make neuroscience the new rocket science — with the brain front and center as the most beautiful, consequential, uncharted mystery of the universe. We assembled an all-star team to produce the project, and then one year into production….the universe decided she had other plans.

Within a matter of 24 hours, the project was thrown a literal “spike” that left it in a free-fall. But we bounced back, and what began as a crisis turned into one the most significant transitions in my life. A few months later, my fellow producer @elenagaby_ and I made the call to direct the film to the finish line, together. This is what I’ve been pouring my heart into this past year.

We are not scientists or Academy Award nominees. She’s a sassy Brazilian who loves the World Cup and pupusas; I’m a girl from the internet who loves AI and dirty comedy. But we are united in our passion for making the story of transformative technology accessible and exciting to everyone.

This film was our masterclass. We’re not done yet - but we’re closer yet to the final arc on our journey.
