B had good questions...so I thought I would tell you what I was taught by our incredible volunteers yesterday at @swingleft and also what I learned out in the neighborhoods: It is a good time to simply listen. I learned a lot. A single mother answered the door and we talked about her being discouraged by the man at the unemployment office about going to nursing school because “people want young nurses, not you.” I silently wondered if a woman had had that job if she would have been told that. She wants to make a living wage and support her son. We encouraged her to pursue her passion and then she asked us in for tea. She said she could even make some and put it in to-go cups for us. She was kind and even now this makes me emotional. We spoke to a man who is a Green Party member now and though he has been a democrat his whole life he says he doesn’t recognize the Democratic Party anymore. He is very very sad about that. Instead of telling him anything, we just told him we understand feeling sad. We are trying to help make a difference and re-instate some checks and balances and he said how much he appreciated our efforts, even if he didn’t think he could support our candidate. He was kind. We met a woman who didn’t want to talk because we upset her cat. She was slightly less kind, but you can’t win em all. We met a man doing home repairs who never got sent his ballot last year and he was frustrated. We gave him his polling place address again and he had a beautiful smile. He always votes democrat and he was proud when we complimented his work. And on and on. The conversations were mostly brief, but it is SO different to walk up to a stranger’s home and ultimately remind them that you care about them. You care about them using their voice because they matter. You don’t have to change anyone’s mind, you just have to ask them what’s on it. That is the thing that stays with me the most. Here we are with such different ideas and lives and sons and daughters and parents and communities...rich and poor and everything in between. And I can just listen and try to learn from them. And just remind them they matter. Because they do. ❤️
