When War was declared in August 1914, Prince Albert (the future George VI) was currently serving on HMS Collingwood. His father, George V, kept him updated on current events – “it is too awful to contemplate”. In the same letter The King affectionately tells his son that "You can be sure that you are constantly in my thoughts". Prince Albert served during the Battle of Jutland and remains the only British Sovereign to have seen action in battle since King William IV. In 1918 His Royal Highness was transferred to the Royal Naval Air Service & learnt to fly at Cranwell and became the first member of The Royal Family to hold a pilot’s license.

To commemorate #Armistice100, every day until Remembrance Sunday we'll be sharing items from the Royal Archives that document how The Royal Family, and the Royal Household played a part in the War – follow the link in our bio.
