This is our sad reality we created. Slowly loosing all of them... Thank you @nickhawkinsphotography for posting and sharing. #Repost - - - - - - This was one of the toughest things I’ve ever photographed. But I knew, when I set out to cover North Atlantic right whales, that I’d have to capture the terrible reality of whale entanglement. We came across this heartbreaking scene during a research cruise in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence. A young male right whale was anchored to the bottom by heavy fishing lines and struggling to breathe. Ropes were wrapped around his head, through his mouth, and even in his baleen. Entanglement in fishing gear is a leading cause of death for North Atlantic right whales. With an estimated 450 individuals remaining, the species is on the brink of extinction. This summer I worked #onassignment for @smithsonianmagazine, with my good friend and writer @tomcheney, covering efforts to save the North Atlantic right whale. Our story is now available online. Follow the link in my bio to find out what happened to this whale, and how a new generation of technologies is promising to turn things around. .
I would like to thank all those whose work we covered for this piece — Fisheries and Oceans Canada, @dalhousie_university @newenglandaquarium , Canadian Whale Institute, and the Ocean Tracking Network —As well as Smithsonian editor @jeffcampagna, for helping us bring attention to this important issue. // #TurningTheTide @sealegacy @ilcp_photographers
