“The Greater Sage-Grouse courting ritual is one of the most amazing wildlife spectacles on the planet. The male birds will gather alone with no females for about a week or so performing their ritual to establish their dominance and territory. The males will fan their tails and step forward as they inflate two yellowish throat sacs and smack them together to make a loud plopping sound. They can do this as many as 6-8 times within a minute and will sometimes stay on the Lek for up to 3 hours doing so. All of this in hopes of attracting as many females as possible to mate with. It’s important to note that the Greater Sage-Grouse habitat is currently threatened and is shrinking across the West due to development, crops, conifer expansion, etc.” ? + caption by Jason Loftus (@untamedimagesbyjl)
