“Ever since Tara started bringing strange bundles of leaves into our home, I have wanted to know more information about witches.”
“I’m Tara, and I guess I’m interested in the bundles of leaves.” That’s how about a dozen 20- and 30-somethings introduced themselves at a witch-themed weekend at @think.olio in sleepy Wassaic, N.Y. last Saturday. It took 500 years, but #witchcraft has gone from crime to commodity. OlioHouse, the brainchild of Chris Zumtobel and David Kurfirst, functions more or less like adult sleepaway camp, with bunk beds, peanut butter and apple slices and a giddy group dynamic, but with alcohol and college-level lectures. For #Halloween weekend, Mr. Zumtobel and Mr. Kurfirst invited Lauren Hudson, who studies anticapitalist organizing, to talk about the history of witch trials and how they fit into a bigger project of state oppression.
