As a kid, we needed to work to eat. We had no money or supermarkets. These days I still do this to remind myself the value of things and because fresh is best :)
This is how coconut is scraped before being squeezed into coconut cream. The cream is then used to boil sweet potato or in ota( sashimi) dishes.
