This afternoon, The Princess Royal visited Abbey Mills pumping station, also known as the ‘Cathedral of Sewage’ to learn more about the biggest expansion to London’s sewer network since Victorian times. HRH learnt about the history of the station, built by Victorian engineer Sir Joseph Bazalgette in 1868 before touring the iconic building and met people involved in the project including site managers and pumping technicians and apprentices. Set for completion in 2024, the Thames Tideway Tunnel @TidewayLondon will reduce the amount of untreated sewage which flows into the river following heavy rain and convert it into renewable energy by Thames Water.
