This year we are partnering again with David Jay and The SCAR Project as part of our #NoLessAWoman campaign, sharing images and stories of women with breast cancer. We take this opportunity to revisit the story of Leah, who has since passed away after we told her story last year. Through her images and her story, we celebrate her life and her fight. Leah was diagnosed at 18 years old with breast cancer and underwent treatment through government insurance. Following a mastectomy she had an unsuccessful reconstruction--the insurance company would not cover a 2nd procedure. Over the years, Leah's condition worsened, despite the valiant efforts from her team of doctors. On February 1, 2018, Leah passed away with her husband Tyler by her side. David Jay photographed her when she was only 19--he tried to return to Alabama to photograph her one last time, but unfortunately, life waits for no one. Thank you Leah, for so selflessly and courageously sharing your life with the world. You will be dearly missed as a member of The SCAR Project family. Leah's husband pays a touching tribute: "Leah was absolutely the kindest person I have ever met. She was always worried about how everyone else was doing even when she was in pain. When the doctor asked how much pain she was in from 1 to 10, I never once ever heard her say higher than 7 even when I would have said 11. She was so remarkable—strong mentally and physically. She was just fun to be around. When she was in a room everyone just seemed to be in a better mood . She would do anything for anyone if she was able. She was always in a good mood. Even in her final days she was making jokes with the little energy she had to talk."
