@nymag ‘s newest cover featuring survivors of school shootings for the past 72 years. This image is of Anthony Borges, who is a 16 years old survivor of the Parkland massacre. Though he was shot 5 times, he barricaded a door in Parkland so that the shooter could not enter and harm the other students in the room. Anthony saved up to 20 lives. He was also the last student to be discharged from the hospital from his injuries.

The next photograph is of Rose Mallinger, a 97 year old survivor of the Holocaust, and the oldest victim killed in the recent Pittsburg #treeoflife shooting. She never missed a service.

I stare at these photographs and can not comprehend the utter devastation of one human being, just beginning his life with the tragic effects of gun violence - both physical and emotional scars to endure his entire lifetime. And another, who at the end of her life, had already suffered so much pain, is taken with the same shameful, senseless and horrifying violence. We must not let this be our “new normal.” We must not accept that our children and our grandparents - the most vulnerable in society - are now susceptible to this kind of violence. Be outraged.
