Have you ever noticed how beautiful a notebook becomes when it’s been broken in, scuffed up and weathered along its journey? I love mine the more they age, even though the novelty of that brand new feeling yields so much excitement of what the pages will hold ahead. Yet have you ever noticed when that first mark or stain happens before the patina reaches a fuller maturation the disappointment of it no longer being pristine and perfect sets in even though there is a knowing that it will gain a richer beauty ahead?

Aren’t we like that too? With life, circumstances, relationships and our own selves? We can see the end result in our mind’s eye but we never quite know the process that it will entail, a process that squeezes us, pressing new muscles that have been dormant or perhaps never used. The first run after a long break hurts. Joints ache, lungs wheeze, muscles tense up and you feel more sore the next day. The only way to overcome it is to get back up and exercise those muscles again. Maybe that’s why I love to run. It’s a physical reminder of things happening within and around. It motivates me to press on, to endure and keep at it. It sounds all nice and good but the actuality often feels grueling. And that’s okay. It’s normal. And it’s okay to feel winded, frustrated, out of sorts and have a million thoughts spinning. We’re creatures of habit yet desperately need change because without it we stop growing and stagnate. Birth, metamorphosis, photosynthesis and any process yielding more life requires change. But then there are blooms to come, wings gained and the miracle that follows. So keep on, don’t give up and be kind to yourself as you go and grow. All of it is good in its time. And yes, this is my #notetoself too.
