On Thursday night, I took my mother to hear Eva Schloss speak at NYU. Eva was a close friend of Anne Frank and her mother married Otto Frank after the war. Eva went into hiding at age 13 and then was captured at 15 and moved to Auschwitz, where she miraculously survived the worst atrocities of the Holocaust. She talked about how she kept silent for four decades until she was asked to speak at an event by surprise. Since then, she has not stopped talking. Those four decades of silence is what brought my mother to tears. Her parents are also Holocaust survivors, but they passed before they got the courage to speak. They lived their lives in silence, trying to forget and also afraid to call attention to themselves. There was something else that struck me about Eva’s talk. She said that one reason Anne Frank’s diary became popular was because, at the time she wrote it, she still believed in the goodness of mankind. Eva wondered if Anne would have felt as hopeful if she had continued writing after she had been captured. “If Anne would have survived, she would have experienced life in the camps and the unbelievable cruelty of those young Nazis... She probably would have changed quite a lot.” Today has been a really hard day for Jewish people, but it was still one man committing an evil act, not an army. Like Anne, I want to believe in the goodness of mankind. I pray that when it comes down to it, the good people (which includes both marginalized people and privileged people) come together and fight for this country. I believe there is more good than bad. I hope we #VOTE and make the people who harbor hatred know that they are NOT the norm. They are the deplorables and they are not accepted here. Because if we don’t, we have already seen and know the worst. Let us listen to the people who are still alive to warn us.?
