For the cover of Serge Gainsbourg’s 1971 album Histoire de Melody Nelson, Jane Birkin transformed into the fictitious Nelson. On the day of the shoot, Gainsbourg was late to set, and the pregnant Birkin was impatient once he arrived. “He opens his briefcase, where he always carries his wads of ‘Pascal’ bank notes and packets of Gitanes, and pulls out an auburn wig – red, really – that he puts on his head to play the clown and make her laugh,” recalls photographer Tony Frank. “Suddenly the atmosphere relaxes.
