“The backside carve is a really functional move that is a part of the foundation of surfing. These moves take place on the face of the wave when it’s not steep enough to hook it in the lip.

As you’re approaching the spot on the wave where you want to start your turn, you start pulling your front arm up to create leverage. As you get to the top of the wave, the back arm goes down into to the water, the head pulls down and the front arm pulls down resting just outside the front leg.

This positioning gives you a cool feeling of being under your board in a controlled and tucked position. This initial positioning really sets up the whole turn, and after you just stay balled up and drive down the wave, pushing with your back leg,
almost like a reverse bottom turn.
