SURVIVOR STRONG: Today we were invited to visit with students, teachers and parents at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland Florida. 15 students and 2 faculty were killed there on February 14th, 2018. Included among the students we met were 5 who had suffered gun shot and shrapnel wounds during the attack as well as one Social Studies teacher who’s class about the Holocaust, suffered two student fatalities and four students with gunshot wounds. I was incredibly moved hearing the students recount their experience during the shooting - how they instinctively moved to two corners of the classroom and built makeshift barricades with the furniture in the room and how one child was protected by the body of another who did not survive. I was also inspired to hear how the students are grieving - giving voice to their sadness and pain and using that energy to work for positive change. @victoriacanal and I performed our song Flower In The Gun which speaks out against bullying and gun violence and is a call to all of us to no matter what walk of life or political preference to become part of the healing our nation needs right now. The 3000+ students and faculty at MSD High School are a bright example of this and it was an honor to share music, conversation, yoga and emotions with them today.
