We wrote Carmelo when we were in Mexico in 2016. We didn’t know if we were ever going to release it, but when the Me Too movement happened in 2017 we rushed to make a video for it to put it out. @mallorymturner and I went to the mountains to shoot cover art, and we decided to do a video that day too. It was just me and her in the woods. Louie stayed home to finish the track, and then I edited the video in the next few days.
There were various reasons why we weren’t able to release the song in 2017. However when the Kavanaugh hearings were happening a couple weeks ago we wanted to have our voice heard in that conversation.
Releasing this song and video has been bittersweet. On one hand I feel hopeful that it can be of a help to anyone else who has gone through something similar. On the other, I have been reliving the trauma of the experience in the song for the past two days. People are doubting me and I’m doubting myself. My friends and you guys are commending me for the song, and I appreciate that, but I want to be real.
I think the reason why people are quiet about these sorts of things is because we know the likely outcome. The fact that victims are forced to recount their pain is hurtful and damaging. Who is strong enough to play that game? I am not.
