Matthew Shepard, whose 1998 murder shocked the world and became a symbol of violence against the LGBTQ community, will be interred in the Washington National Cathedral later this month. Shepard died 20 years ago on Oct.12, a few days after he was beaten, burned and left tied to a fence in Laramie, Wyoming, by two men who targeted him because he was gay. He was 21. Worried about potential vandalism, Shepard’s parents held onto his ashes until they found a proper place to finally lay him to rest. (?: Matthew Shepard Foundation)
