Here I am on a beach outside my hometown of Sandefjord, Norway (I’m pointing, because that’s what you do when you’re a director and someone takes a picture of you). It was a world away from everything – but only a block away from the video store. It was 1986 and I was fourteen years old. As you can see from my outfit I was deep into my brief French New Wave period: life, death, jump cuts. My existentialism lasted for about six months before I was back making mainstream blockbusters behind the local gas station. A couple of years earlier my parents had bought the videocamera you’re seeing in the picture – and it was the beginning of a beautiful friendship. I was not allowed to play with it – but that’s all I ever did. It was a JVC camera with a separate, bulky VHS recorder – and it survived years of being strapped to skateboards and homemade crane rigs. I was truly the first of a video generation who could shoot for hours on one tape – again and again. It was in color and had sound. It was a revolution. I feel so lucky to having been able to set a course for my life at such an early age. I still believe the movie theater is a magical place. And I still feel like a kid when I’m making movies #filmmaker #tbt ?
