Last night I got to spend time with amazing people from the LGBTQI+ community celebrating @turshen and @abrowntable ‘s new cookbooks with @jarrymag at @mofad - it was so meaningful to be in a room that felt safe and welcoming (where no one would ask if Julia and I were sisters or just best friends) and it was a helpful reminder of how much life can change over a short period of time. I didn’t come out until I was 30 years old. That, for me, feels late in life. And it’s sometimes I’ve always been self-conscious about. For that reason I’ve always felt insecure at queer events that I’ll be the fraud in the room that doesn’t belong. It’s taken a long time to own all the complexities and contradictions and messiness of my story and identity, but as I left my therapist’s office to go meet Julia and our friends, it really sunk in that life IS messy. And that’s ok. Identity is complicated and finding people who like you or love you not in spite of it all but because of it all is truly a gift. I’m so thankful for getting to be with some of our chosen family last night and when I saw this piece that @folklorecompany shared I just nodded and smiled. ♥️ #nationalcomingoutday #nationalcomingoutday?
