I’m posting super late for #worldmentalhealthday, but I really wanted to say to everyone out there that caring for your mental health is the single most important thing you can do for yourself and the people you care about. It isn’t selfish or narcissistic—you have to put on your own oxygen mask before helping others. People often ask me how I do everything I do and still find balance, and the answer is I *don’t* have balance. I am often stressed, exhausted, frustrated and overwhelmed. But I rely on the tools that are proven to help: I go to therapy (therapy is awesome). I talk to friends about my problems (your friends don’t see you as a burden! They love you!). I rest and take time for myself whenever I can, whether it’s a hike, a nap, a treat, or even an hour on the couch in front of the tv. Never think you’re the only one going through what you’re going through, that people won’t understand, or that there isn’t a way to get help. Mental health is like any other aspect of your health: it affects everyone. Talking about, and caring for, your psychological well-being is powerful, healthy, and very, very cool.
