A few months ago the lovely @sjdooley gathered a group of influencers, including myself, @niomismart @joannahalpin @sarahhalpin to take part in her latest doc “Fashion’s Dirty Secrets” about the polluting effects of fast fashion The programme airs tonight on @BBC 1 at 9pm It was a really interesting dialogue between all of us and Stacey but the framing of the conversation, inevitably for the ease of a prime time audience’s understanding is that we “influencers” are the guilty parties encouraging our audiences to buy buy buy Pessimistically I fear my Twitter might get tomato pelted after the programme airs but as I won’t get to see it myself (flying to Shanghai as we speak) I thought I would just preface the programme by saying this... We are ALL in the business of selling stuff, whether you’re an influencer, the fashion section of a newspaper, a fashion website, an editor of a a monthly or otherwise... We can ALL do better to publicise and talk about the alternatives to fast fashion/excess consumption and highlight the environmental impact of the industry as well as the people that are actually coming up with innovative solutions and the new generation of designers and creative directors who have sustainability in their DNA (as opposed to a box ticking exercise) To levy the responsibility on one part of the media landscape is perhaps slightly unfair so yes, it’s great that Stacey posed the question specifically to influencers because of their sway on “millennial spending” but the problem is one that requires a deepset change of culture across the board... If you’re in the U.K. please watch it and let me know what you think! I will catch up on iPlayer and write more...
