On a somewhat somber Sunday, our Sound and Vision today is Joni Mitchell’s 1970 heartbreaking and simultaneously uplifting album Blue. The album was written over the course of 1970, which included Mitchell’s hiatus from touring, her time spent in Europe, her breakup with Graham Nash, and the beginning of her relationship with James Taylor. Her signature off-tuned guitar and deeply introspective lyrics created an atmosphere that was both entirely unique and entirely beautiful. Her lyrics were so personal and revelatory that songwriting legend Kris Kristofferson supposedly commented, upon hearing the album, “Joni! Keep something of yourself!” The album’s cover features a dark, blue-toned photograph of Mitchell singing into a microphone. The photo was taken by Tim Considine, who was a somewhat prominent child actor in the 1950s and is also a writer, automotive historian, and photographer. His photo captures the literal and figurative theme of the aptly-titled album, which is both a rumination on sadness as well as an exploration of complex expressions and emotions.
