An update about Chicken the cat who was declawed in early June at Stringtown Animal Hospital. ?? Chicken was taken to Rascal Animal Hospital, a no-declaw vet practice, yesterday for a recheck. She was on Onsior for a week but it didn't help her issues with walking, limping, standing on her back legs, etc. She will now start Gabapentin and see if that helps relieve her pain and suffering.??? A radiologist reviewed Chicken's x-rays that were taken by Stringtown Animal Hospital and said, "Can't verify osseous fragments on the lateral images. That said, there is significant digit swelling bilaterally (the 3rd and 4th are the worst.)” Rascal Animal hospital reviewed the x-rays and said, "No P3 remnants noted in any of the front claws, changes in the P1-P2 joint consistent with arthritis or resolving osteomyelitis." Stringtown Animal Hospital's review of these same x-rays said, "No sign of osteomyelitis or factures of bones, no issue with declaw bones or fragments" and said that she has a "healed declaw, resolved fever, possible phantom pain if holding up paws at home, no treatment needed at this time." FYI, osteomyelitis is infection of the bone with inflammation. Chicken had a 105 fever and infection about a month ago which Stringtown Animal Hospital said wasn't related to her declaw. Chicken will be taken to a veterinary specialty clinic in Ohio for an orthopedic consultation and more x-rays to determine the exact reason for these serious issues. She may also need to have surgery to help with the damage that the declaw caused. Basically her weight bearing toes have the most swelling and are the reason she isn't walking well and suffering.
