On this glorious Fall morning, I walk silently with my rescue mare “Belle” through the Santa Monica Mountains. We are in unity even though we are separated. I pause to pick the purple lupine sandwiching the overgrown trail, and she stops in unison. In this moment, the flowers, the sun scorching my exposed back, my horse by my side, I am safe. I am free of sadness, anxiety, doubt or pain. I  feel only the ease of living in the “here and now”. For thousands of years, horses have been a profound presence and partner in the creation of our natural world. They have also been mirrors for humans emotional terrain. As prey animals, horses are constantly reading the environment and in the presence of humans they pick up on our biofeedback- our thoughts, intentions and most authentic feelings. Their herd dynamics are a reflection of the human social order. Each member of the herd is valued and integral to the support of the whole. This innate “being” of horses, is a concept that rings true for anyone who wishes to reclaim their space and voice in society,  most especially women. There is an extremely powerful healing dynamic between survivors of sexual trauma and horses. I’ve witnessed it first hand. “Bethy, I was raped”, is a call I hope you never receive, but statistically it’s almost a guarantee that you will. When someone who not only shares your DNA, but who’s life force flows in tandem with yours, who “carries your heart, carries it in their heart” is raped- time stands still. Numbness comes before tears. Tears dry up, and this is a never ending “well” of abundantly flowing devastation. I am one of the very few who have never had to experience the aftermath of sexual trauma first hand, but I’ve been an active participant, voice and cheerleader in the road to helping to heal my sister, and as a result, the women of my organization SheHerdPower. I will continue to do so. Today and everyday. To all survivors: We hear you, we feel you, we see you. Always, until the “powers that be someday become the powers that once were”, and beyond. #SheHerdPower Www.sheherdpower.com
