I think I’ve watched “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington” way too many times and perhaps I’m a little too idealistic and optimistic. Today was gutting and the mood in D.C. was understandably bleak, yet when I arrived today I imagined HUGE enraged groups flooding the streets ALL NIGHT LONG. Nope. Frankly, I think people are exhausted and deflated. And I imagine they need to regroup a bit. After I dropped my things off at the hotel, I walked directly to the Supreme Court. Standing in front of that building, looking at those immortal words—“EQUAL JUSTICE UNDER LAW”—I cried—well, sobbed. Actually, it turned into the ugly cry and a protesting stranger asked, “Do you need a hug?” I didn’t look up or respond, but she just embraced me. We clung to each other, crying, for what seemed like forever. It was cathartic. Then, we wiped our tears, I was handed a sign, and I joined them in protesting. We were a small but mighty group this evening and I bless each and every one of those wonderful women—our band of misfits—who stood together on this devastating day for America, commiserating and supporting one another. We will continue to stand together tomorrow, at Hart Atrium, and at the polls on Nov 6!! We will never give up. We will never rest. And still she persisted—and she always will.
