In 2013 when Dr. Howie Mandel told me I was having a boy, I sighed the biggest sigh of relief bc I knew he would have an easier life than I’ve had. I live in New York, in ostensibly one of the most progressive thinking cities in the country and I deal with chauvinism on a daily basis. I experience husbands and fathers of people I love being utterly disinterested and only engaging with Jason because he is the man and I am “just a mom”. They assume I don’t know anything about money, politics, finance, real estate, or current events.
I make more money than a lot of these men, I speak two languages, I write books and am politically active but it doesn’t matter. I’m a girl. And a lot of “men”, glaze over the minute a “girl” is speaking. This is the world I live in. And unfortunately this is a world I am always going to live in. The only hope I have- the only radical action I can take is to raise two boys who will hopefully be two of millions of young men, who see their opposite sex counterparts as equals. If you like me, are a woman with a chip on your shoulder about always feeling unheard (which really should be all of us) I urge you to pay close attention to what messages you are consciously or unconsciously feeding your kids. I am holding you as well as myself responsible! Oh, and happy Monday.
