“The last on-sale date today of @テス・ホリデー best-selling Cosmopolitan cover. For the entire month of September this has been ‘news’-that a size 26 woman could be on our cover. We had people cancel subscriptions because of it, Piers Morgan raging about it (for weeks) every columnist on almost every newspaper thrash out its meaning and even had it hoisted high above Times Square. I have had people call for my resignation, dozens of social media tantrums (from both men and women showing this is not a gendered debate) as well as death threats. But what Tess has and does have to deal with on a daily basis doesn’t even touch it. But there have also been constant phone calls to our office of people who were so moved by the cover they felt compelled to speak to the team.We have had young women write in in their droves to tell us their stories of self-loathing and how seeing a ‘different’ representation of the female form on a glossy magazine has helped them. We have had older women look back on their lives and wondered how different it would have been if they had seen this image when they were measuring out their Ryvita and cottage cheese (and I was one of those woman). But best of all people have talked about an issue we all still clearly feel deeply uncomfortable about: FAT (a word that Tess is thankfully helping to destigmatize) If you didn’t get the issue please read the story before you make any judgements. Tess is on our cover for many reasons over and above her body. She is a true Cosmo Girl.” @cosmopolitanuk
