The legendary HMS Black Joke started life as a Brazilian slave ship called the Henriquetta. It was captured and recommissioned as the HMS Black Joke into the British Navy’s West Africa Squadron also known as the Preventative Squadron which fought slavery off the coasts of Africa for a majority of the 1800’s. The name “Black Joke” reportedly comes from a song of the time. When the Royal Navy ordered that Black Joke be burned due to structural concerns after a successful career on the seas, Peter Leonard, surgeon of HMS Dryad, wrote that she was the ship "which has done more towards putting an end to the vile traffic in slaves than all the ships of the station put together." ? #WAVY
