This is long, but hopefully meaningful to someone with a goal and aspiration. If I‘ve learned anything working as a photographer over these years it’s that genuine friendship among your peers is the most important and meaningful thing you can achieve. This photo here is by my very good friend @daveblackphoto - a true master of photography. Dave is a master of light, timing, composition, instruction and a generous man of scrupulous character. I can’t articulate high enough praise for him, a common theme among those who know him. Dave has done it all at the highest level, you name it and chances are he’s worked for them. I made the leap to professional photography near the end of 2004, I had been publishing work but moonlighting at my full time job at Hewlett-Packard. The first person I reached out to was Dave, blindly I might add as we lived in the same city. It took him about 6 weeks to reply, he’s in high demand and I was just surprised to see any response. I was desperate for work at the time and was hoping to assist him, not only for revenue but too learn. He suggested we meet for lunch and in our conversation he said “I have a full-time assistant already, I looked at your work and what you need is opportunity”. We started going out and shooting photos together and he took me under his wing so to speak. He threw me a major opportunity near the end of 2005, introducing me to @bradpix, a now long time friend who was then working at @nytimes. After that Dave introduced me to @summitworkshops, @nikonusa and a litany of others. Through these outlets I started making new connections, and through those more, but none would have been possible without Dave. I honestly feel that if I draw a line through my career the vast majority of it leads me to Dave and the ground work he generously laid. I am eternally grateful and humbled by this. Thank you Dave. For those aspiring to make it in your own walk of life the best advice I can give is find a good mentor and nurture your friendships throughout your journey with genuine sincerity. Further, check out @daveblackphoto if you want to be blown away.
