Today is #RememberMeThursday the one day, every September that we remember the gift our rescue pets have brought to our lives and we to theirs. The day we remember all those innocent and voiceless animals who never received such gifts and who died. Alone. In the back room of a shelter. We’re lighting candles all over the world today to honor those we’ve lost, those we’ve found and those still waiting for someone to rescue them from fear, abandonment and senseless death. Together we can shed light, be the light, remember the light. Let’s never forget the pure joy, unconditional love, loyalty and empathy our beloved pets have brought to our lives. Let’s never forget that that is their purpose. Let’s never forget those who never get to fulfill that purpose. On this day last year I held my beautiful Gracie in my arms. After brain surgery, months of recovery, radiation, medication and hope we were able to extend her life for almost a year. Last month I had to say goodbye. It was worth it. To love her and be loved by her. Today I hold Sergeant. Rescued from a Uhaul truck abandoned on the side of the road filled with 164 of his brothers and sisters. They had no water. No food. No air. Today he is healthy, well and brings me an abundance of comfort and love that has helped to fill the broken heart Gracie left behind. They’re like that, companion animals, selfless in their love. I am forever grateful for how they have enriched my life and will do whatever I can to be their protectors, their advocates.
