OUTSIDE - THE ART CRIME COMIC - “What a fantastic death abyss...” -
As we mentioned yesterday, David Bowie’s 1. Outside album was released on 25th September, 1995, in some territories. It was released 23 years ago today in others.
There was an avalanche of promotional items associated with the release, including: signed promo book with CD, displays, posters, lithographs, unique two-part mailshot, postcard sets, briefcase press kit...not to mention the myriad audio releases in various formats and, of course, the videos.
The album was released on 26th September, 1995, in Mexico, where the idea for the ART CRIME comic novel was hatched. Here’s an edited excerpt from remezcla.com + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +
At the Mexican offices of BMG, Bowie’s label at the time, record exec and future reality TV judge Arturo López Gavito brainstormed a way to give fans an incentive to buy the album. He thought a comic book would better explain the story within Outside.
He contacted Mauricio Hammer, editor of the long-running Círculo Mixup magazine, and recruited him to produce the comic book. Hammer, for his part, assigned the execution to a young graphic designer called Victor “Pico” Covarrubias, who was entrusted with the task of illustrating the short story Bowie wrote in the liner notes of Outside.
With help from fellow illustrator Jotabe, he pencilled and inked the whole thing, with Mauricio printing the short run. The comic, titled Art Crime, was given to shoppers buying the CD. It is unknown how many copies were made, but judging by the amount of information available, we can assume it was an extremely limited pressing. + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +
Indeed, along with the German suitcase press kit, the ART CRIME comic is very hard to find now. Though one recently sold on eBay for $110 to a lone bidder…a lucky one at that, it normally fetches a much higher price.
