Gratitude jar #2! So as gratifying as it is to write down my gratitudes and allow my perspective to shift through this exercise, I’m also really enjoying the process of going back and reading them once the jar is full. We just filled up our second jar and I Had a powerful experience reading through them. It’s always challenging for me to adjust back to life after I’ve been consumed with a job, and this past week was no different. To go from 100 miles per hour to “I’m not sure what’s coming next and there’s nothing immediately on my calendar” is pretty jarring and finding balance again can take a bit of emotional work. I was so moved going through these gratitudes from the past month because they reminded me of the constancy of blessing. Being alive is blessing. The way the sunlight plays on the leaf of a tree is blessing. A smile from a stranger is blessing. My experience tells me that when I look for and acknowledge the blessings around me, my heart fills with joy. And I believe that heart’s joy is possible no matter what life throws at you. No person or circumstance can steal your joy unless you allow them to. Practicing gratitude is a way to hold your joy close, To choose to see the blessing around you and to defiantly shout in the face of anyone who would try to take your joy from you. I read those sheets of construction paper and remembered that I was grateful yesterday, which reminded me to be grateful today, Which gave me the assurance that I will also be grateful tomorrow. Blessing is constant. These gratitudes planted me and rooted me back into the joy of my life with my husband, my kids, and my community. This week I’m filling up on time with them, and I’m making dates with my friends who fill my cup and I’m remembering that there is such good in the midst of uncertainty and waiting, if I make the choice to open my eyes and take it all in. How will you choose gratitude today? How will you hold your joy Close? How will you see the blessing around you?
