Meet Arianna Margulis (@butlikemaybe), a cartoonist based in “New York City by way of Bloomfield HIlls, Michigan.” Her New York life influences a lot of her illustrations, from riding the subway, to working in fashion. As she puts it, “It’s all personal, whether it’s my past, present or future anxieties and dreams.” Arianna describes her aesthetic as “poppy, bright, and silly” through the use of simple lines and shapes, with “heartbreaking optimism.” It’s this optimism that got her the success she has today, and her advice is to not be shy about your work. She “DM’d EVERYONE” asking to check our her cartoons, and for the ones that the message stuck she says still maintain a relationship with her today. She’s inspired by people who aren’t afraid to be weird, since she says she has an issue with being too serious. Working in fashion often gets her in a headspace of feeling not “cool” or “high fashion” enough, so she finds power in women like Tina Fey, Mindy Kaling, and Tiffany Haddish. “Just be your freaky self!” is her motto. She also loves looking at @milk for an account that highlights unique photographers and artists who create an aesthetically awesome world you want to dream in. Her passion is in art, and she dreams of one day having her own art show and having pieces hang in a gallery or museum. Her other passion is sugar. That’s right, sugar. She says she keeps a tiny bottle of agave sweetener in her purse to sweeten drinks at all times! Arianna has had great success, but her proudest accomplishment is a mural she did for Planned Parenthood. It was her first ever, and it was 100 ft long that stood at Houston St and 2nd Avenue in New York City. She loved making a powerful political stance, supporting a woman’s right to choose, and being able to shout it as big as a city block. #ShineTheory ✨
