I took a long ride up Highway 33 yesterday, conquering that beautiful beast, Pine Mountain - 60 miles and 5100 feet.
My good bud @johnphaneuf joined me for the first half and we chatted about life, the universe and the inside of the human brain. Like everyone, I sometimes find the bad thoughts wrestling the good thoughts. As we trundled up the hot mountain he then shared with me a Native American proverb:
A tribal elder is talking with his grandson about life. "A fight is going on inside me," he says to the boy.
"A terrible fight between two dogs. One is evil - he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, superiority, ego."
He continues, "The other dog is good - he is joy, peace, love, hope, humility, kindness, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. The same fight is going on inside you - and inside every other person, too." The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, "Which dog will win?" The chief replied,"The one you feed." John then turned back and I headed up the rest of the mountain with plenty to think about.
Thx John, I needed that, and I’m looking forward to the next ride and more pearls of wisdom.
