☝?Libero Tip of the Day: From @dustinwatten ?. A big emphasis in training this summer for me has been defense, particularly being able to be balanced, quick and independent with my arms digging quicks and pipes. Most of the time on defense (and on serve receive) our arms unconsciously gravitate towards each other making a default connection in our midline. (Even if the ball isn’t going there!) Once the arms are connected only then do we begin tracking and pursuing our perceived line of the ball, whether it’s in our midline or outside our body. This isn’t that big of a problem if we’ve made a great read on the attack and the ball is coming into our midline or slightly outside of body. But in a game where simplicity is king, we lose a lot of time, balance and control if the ball is outside our body. ?Still with me?! If our arms make that default move inwards, connecting in our midline (even though the ball is outside our midline) our platform now has to chase the ball, pulling our hips & creating a situation where our midline isn’t facing our desired target. Not only do we have to get a accurate contact on the ball but because our hips have been pulled away from our target we have to squeeze an intense, precise angle (using our inside shoulder) to put the ball where we want it to go. In the video, you can see the patience I’m trying to develop with my arms staying independent, fighting the urge for them to gravitate towards my midline. ☝?For example: If the ball is on my right side.. Instead of my right arm going into my midline, connecting and then swinging it back outside my body. ?? I slowly move both arms right to the area where I perceived the ball will be. If I don’t have enough time to connect, I still have one arm that can salvage a huge quick attack with a great angle, propelling the ball to go straight up. ??‍♂️Put it to work! 1. Video yourself digging. 2. See if your arms naturally gravitate and connect in your midline. 3. Do your hips open up when balls are hit outside your body? 4. The more I play, the more I realize how important balance and simplicity play in me being a consistently great libero. (I have still have a lot to learn!)
