World Championships 2018 - the worst result of my career. I could write a post with some excuses, or this or that, or blah blah but I won’t, it doesn’t matter, this game is hard and this round I lost. This post in fact is more about a reflection on one of the medalists and the words he conveyed, more specifically the one that took bronze in Bouldering.

Gregor Vezonik (@gregorvezonik) - It was his last post that inspired me to write this one I’m writing, and if you haven’t read his, I really urge you to take the time. He reflects on the difference between his two World Championships 2016/2018 and it brought tears to my eyes. Why it’s so touching is because every competitor has doubts and competitions where they fail but the victories always overshadow those defeats. It’s being reminded of the journey that it took to get to the victory that is often the most touching. The podium shot and interview questions never properly reflect the hundreds of hours spent training, sacrificing time with friends, all for our love of sport and drive to succeed. Gregor’s story reminded me of my first World Championships back in 2007 where I missed both semi-finals, it motivated me to get better for the next World Championships; fast forward 2 years and I was in both finals (lead/boulder) and walked away with my first combined Gold Medal ?. Gregor, you are an inspiration to many, not only for your performance and strength but also for your candour and attitude. Never stop being who you are, keep smiling, and keep training, now everyone knows you got this.
