Happy last day of #NYFW! I'm @DressUpWithJess, the fashion features editor at Teen Vogue, which means I work on projects like our Disability in Fashion cover.
I remember reading magazines as a teen and not seeing anyone who looked like me. I knew I wanted to be a writer but I didn't even think fashion was a possibility! I majored in English at Columbia University and planned on working in news. But when I landed a gig as the fashion assistant at Essence Magazine, everything changed.
In that role, I was responsible for managing my boss's schedule, fetching her lunch, and making closet returns. It was a challenging yet rewarding job that opened up so many opportunities for me — but in my heart, I really wanted to write.
To pursue my dream of being a writer, I'd work during the day and write posts at night for Essence.com and for my newly-formed blog, @glamazonsblog. That leads me to a piece of career advice: Don't wait for the 'perfect' gig. If you want to be a writer, start a blog. A photographer? Photograph people on the street to build your portfolio. Create your own opportunities.
Eventually, my hustling paid off. I started writing full-time as a freelancer, first for The New York Times and later for a ton of outlets including Teen Vogue. When a full-time position opened up, I joined the Teen Vogue staff as digital fashion editor.
2 years later, I'm so proud of the work we've done to help make the fashion industry a more inclusive place. My goal is that no one else will have to grow up not seeing themselves represented in fashion. It's not easy work, but every time I read a comment that someone is inspired by what we do, it keeps me going. ✨ #HowIGotHere ?: @zak_krevitt
