Lighting is absolutely essential in Nordic countries, where the sun can go into hiding for months at a time. No wonder Alvar Aalto experimented so heavily with light, mostly the indirect kind. He used the building itself as part of the lighting scheme, as it would reflect partly off the ceiling.
