I try very hard not to put up many posts bragging about stuff unless it’s really good weather or a great meal… But this last week something cool happened, Counting Stars has officially sold 26 million copies worldwide and is officially 10 times platinum/diamond in N America. What’s weird about it is - it was our third single… Not obvious as a “hit” to anyone surrounding it other than a couple people, but my entire career has been paved with watching the songs that everyone shouted “It’s a SMASH!” somehow fail and watching the songs that got passed on become hits…. This is absolutely the most unpredictable industry I or anyone could possibly choose to get into, with a lower success rate than restaurants, so I take every single sale or listen or concert ticket with absolute indescribable gratitude and thanks and I actually do still pinch myself at least once a week that I’m still allowed to have this job and somehow make a living… My goal was to make a living doing music, on ANY level. After Apologize and Bleeding Love I thought “well that’s probably it.” Goals change. Suffice it to say- I still love what I do and I will keep on writing “smashes” that totally FAIL, and B+ records that somehow smash ?. It’s been 16 years since I quit my day jobs, thanks to anyone & everyone that’s ever cared to listen, and to Pottery Barn & Joe’s Crab Shack- pretty sure U still owe me my last paycheck. ❤️.
