This is the same year I took a class in upstate NY with Allen Ginsberg. Just before that, as I always did, I studied at Alliance Francaise in Paris — a six-week intensive French language course. On the weekends, I would grab red wine, cheese and baguettes, walk to Pere Lachaise cemetery, look for Jim Morrison’s grave, hand out most of what I bought to anyone who was hanging around, climb to the top of a tomb, and lay down between the pitch of one tomb and the pitch of another, then drink, eat, and watch everyone below for the day.
This was when it all worked: the wine, the excessive traveling, the nomadic, don’t give a fuck existence. This is when it was as colorful as a chaotic dust devil of oil paints.
