Following his recovery, McCain volunteered for assignment on the USS Oriskany, a ship involved in Operation Rolling Thunder. During his 23rd bombing mission of this operation, McCain was shot down by a missile over Hanoi. He ejected from his A-4E Skyhawk and parachuted into a lake, almost drowning. He was pulled out by the North Vietnamese, and was held as POW for five and a half years, eventually being released in 1973. (Photo credit: National Geographic)
