I see article after article about fossil fuels and their effect on #climatechange . But rarely, if ever, is the role of animal agriculture mentioned. Which is absurd, as animal agriculture contributes 45% of climate change.
Here’s how:
20% from direct Methane emissions. There are roughly 150,000,000,000 farmed animals on the planet. All of them producing methane, which is a 20x stronger climate change gas than CO2.
15% from rainforest deforestation. 90% of rainforest deforestation is due to creating grazing land or growing crops for livestock. And the rainforests are the best sources for carbon capture and sequestration.
10% from fossil fuel use in animal agriculture: growing food, transporting food, transporting farm animals, transporting water, heating, cooling, etc.
Combined: 45% of climate change is a result of animal agriculture. To disregard this fact will simply mean the end of our species and life as we know it. Without a stable climate we die, it’s as simple as that.
