The nurse came in and told me, “Third babies are always the weird births” and she was not wrong. Ten years ago tonight I was in labor with Beatrix. I felt death for the first time when she turned and became stuck while crowning. During that bone-crushing, heart-stopping, coyote-yelling pain, I felt the deaths of women in labor for centuries before me and for those happening concurrently. Images of women dying came flooding to me from the ether and I was mourning each of them with every push. It was over-dramatic but so real. Between the waves of star seeing and losing consciousness, I just kept thinking, “I am going to die.”
But I did not die. Obviously. She came into the world at 5:30am on August 31st. I told the doctors I wanted to leave because “I got this.” And they discharged me by 7am. I went home with my three kids and thought a lot about death and life and the luck of the draw and sometimes I think back to how insane that feeling was and feel stronger. And sometimes it just makes me feel bad. Either way, she’s a great kid. #tbt
