#repost @jerrynews | Data released today from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show a record high in STD diagnoses, with 2.3 million cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis diagnosed in 2017. The increase in STD diagnoses is attributed to a lack of federal funding for state public health programs, as well as an increase in drug abuse, and socioeconomic problems.
___
The CDC compared their data from 2017 to data collected in 2013 and is as follows:
-
Gonorrhea rose by 67% overall, doubling among men and showing a "concerning" increase in women for the third year in a row.
-
Primary and secondary syphilis rose 76%, almost 70% of which are cases among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men.
-
Chlamydia rose by 21.9% and remains the most common condition. 45% were diagnosed in 15- to 24-year-olds.
___
These STDs can be cured with antibiotics, however untreated cases are causing serious health issues like infertility, ectopic pregnancy, stillbirth in infants and higher risk of HIV infection.
